The first meeting of the Miami County Retired Teachers Association was held at the First National Bank in Troy, Ohio, December 3, 1970. M L Routson served as chairperson for that first meeting. Hazel Baver and Orph Kerr were present from ORTA. Hazel informed the retirees regarding the benefits of forming a county organization. About fifty persons attended and expressed an interest. M L Routson appointed a nominating committee: Madeline Thompson, Chair; Edna Agenbroad and Oneida Minnich.
A second meeting was held March 15, 1971, in the same location. The following officers were elected:
President - M L Routson
Vice President - Raymond Daniels
Recording Secretary - Ruth Reaver
Corresponding Secretary - Marcia Shanks
Treasurer - Russell Lutz
President Routson appointed Committee Chairman:
Constitution - Mary Quick
Legislative - Elfreda Dunn
Membership - Mary Moyer
Program - Mary Frank
Social - Neva Bodenmiller
Attendance - Marcia Shanks
ORTA Representatives Hazel Baver and Orph Kerr were in attendance again. President Routson introduced John Kennedy an insurance consultant from the Chicago NRTA office. He gave a comprehensive report on services available for retired members.
From 1971 thru September 1998 meetings were held at the Troy Public Library, the Hayner Cultural Center, and Bruckners Nature Center Troy, Ohio. During 1999 thru 2001 meetings were held at Brandts Restaurant and Duffs Smorgasbord in Piqua, Ohio.
May 21, 2001 Secretary, Eileen Katzenberger wrote, "President, Glenn Fulks with 10 members present introduced ORTA Western Ohio Vice President, Dale Van Tine. Dale agreed to prepare mailings to all Miami County retirees to be paid by ORTA to assist in improving MCRTA membership". Beginning that year the Association reconstituted itself to become the fastest growing chapter in the state.
Since that time several members have held the role of president however Dale and Bill Phillips have served the most years. Dale retired December 2010 after taking the Association from ground roots to a healthy membership. His generosity of time and effort were valuable contributions.The membership thanked Dale and wished him well.
Meetings are presently held at the First Church of the Nazarene, Troy, Ohio. See Calendar Link for dates and times of meetings.
